South Side Partnership

Students who attend South Side High School have the privilege of enrolling in AFJROTC by taking the course at Wayne High School. This unique ability was created in 2024 when a Cross-Town Agreement was established between Wayne High School and South Side High School enabling students to take part in the JROTC Program. JROTC has been in FWCS since 1994 with the Air Force program located at Wayne High School. Now, South Side Students can join Wayne and New Tech Academy Students and receive full credit and certification towards a JROTC Graduation Pathway by taking JROTC at Wayne.

General FAQs

How do I join JROTC?

Congratulations for wanting to enjoy an exciting, fun and challenging program in high school. The only thing you need to do to join JROTC is to contact your school counselor and tell them you want to add JROTC to your schedule.
JROTC may be added to your schedule at any time. If you have any issues, please contact the JROTC Instructors at Wayne, we will help you out with anything you may need:

Do I have to pay for uniforms?

No, the uniforms are provided at no cost by the United States Air Force. We provide a full set of the Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) uniform and a set of physical training short and shirts at no cost. Some cadets will also be issued a full set of the blue service uniform. Costs like field trips, competitions, spirit shirts, etc. are all additional costs incurred.

Is the military a requirement for JROTC?

JROTC Graduation Pathway

As of February 2026, JROTC in FWCS is an approved specific graduation pathway for the State of Indiana. With Graduation Pathways, students can individualize their graduation requirements to align to their postsecondary goal of Enrollment, Employment, or Enlistment leading to service. In addition, if a student takes the ASVAB in their 11th or 12th grade year it can also count as a graduation pathway with a score of 31 or higher on the test.

What credits do I receive for JROTC?

JROTC is a General Elective and may count as a PE credit for all students. In addition, students who take us for 2 years or more earn a Certificate of Training or Completion used for advancement in college ROTC or advanced enlistment in a military branch earning more money than those without JROTC experience.
JROTC is your certification program for enlisting in the military. Those students who take JROTC in high school will be paid more money when they enlist in the military than those who didn’t take JROTC.

What co-curricular activities are available?

JROTC is a scheduled class during the school day. Students will learn about Aerospace Science topics and Leadership Education topics in addition to physical training. There are an additional 14 different teams and clubs that cadets may join that take place after school. These teams/clubs meet on a given day after school Monday through Friday. Students can take the late bus home after school when participating in these activities.

When do we attend JROTC and is there transportation available to Wayne High School?

All South Side students may take the FWCS provided school bus to Wayne. All South Side Students attend Wayne JROTC for their 7th period. Students may travel on the bus, in their own car (authorized student drivers only) or a parent/guardian may drive them.

Cadets will attend JROTC during 7th period and will remain in class for a minimum of 45 minutes. Cadets must have a total of 120 hours of class time in a school year for course credit. Cadets officially get out of class at 2:40 p.m. each day to satisfy course requirements.

South Side students will depart Wayne High School after 7th period using either parent/guardian transportation, their own car (authorized student drivers only) or the return Bus used to transport students back to South Side.
Students are also afforded the opportunity to participate in after-school programs and teams within JROTC. All teams such as Robotics, Color Guard, Rocketry, Drones, etc…. take place after school. The practice schedule is posted each school year based on the teams the cadets are participating in and running each year.
